Here's to the underdog

I didn't get to watch a ton of NCAA football this past weekend, but the bits of it I did get to see were pretty amazing. In fact, this was a weekend to match all weekends if you are a fan of the underdog team. As you know, I dig my upset victories as long as it isn't against any of my favorite teams. Unfortunately, the Michigan State Spartans are a dumpster fire this year, so it isn't that big of a deal to me how well they do. Their narrow loss to Northwestern this past weekend is just more evidence of that.
My brother in law and I were hanging out this weekend though, and as we were driving to the airport on Sunday he mentioned that six of the top ten teams this past weekend lost their games. I think another stat I saw said this was the most unranked versus ranked upsets in quite some time over the past weekend.
It was nuts!
Let me get right to it.
So as I said before, number 25 Northwestern had a 24 to 21 win over Michigan State. I didn't even get to watch the game, but I don't really feel like I missed anything. It's just another Michigan State loss and another mark on the road to a losing season.
One of the biggest upsets of the weekend would have to be Florida taking down number 7 Texas. I was actually in Austin for this game, but not at the game. We had looked into getting tickets, but back when Florida was not losing, and Texas was still the number 1 team, tickets were something like $400 a seat. That was a big nope from us. So the Gators took down the Longhorns 27 to 24.
Meanwhile, number 22 LSU upset number 16 Mississippi State 31 to 0, and though it wasn't technically an upset, number 4 Ohio State beat number 5 Indiana 19 to 15 in what was probably one of the closest plays of the weekend on that last second attempt by Indiana.
The other huge upset of the weekend was the Auburn win over number 1 Georgia beating them 27 to 24. Hmm, haven't we seen that score somewhere before? Pretty crazy that both of those big games ended with the same score in favor of the underdog.
Number 14 Tennessee took down number 6 Alabama 26 to 10, and though Miami won and will potentially move closer to the number 1 spot this weekend, they needed two overtimes to do it over Miami. That was a pretty epic ending to that game. I saw a bit of it when we got home from hanging around downtown Austin.
Number 20 Houston upset number 18 Oklahoma State, and number 8 BYU took down number 2 Notre Dame 28 to 24.
That means either BYU or Miami will move up to the number 1 and 2 spots one way or the other. Like I said, it was a crazy weekend, and I think that the NFL was just about as crazy from some of the stories I have seen, but I will get to all of that tomorrow!
