🦅 Eagles Talk #1b — The Numbers Don't Lie: How Bad Is This Eagles Defense?

October 29, 2026 — Still Recovering from Dallas

Well, I've finally had a couple of days to digest that Monday night disaster.

I've looked at the statistics. I've watched some of the film. I've read the breakdowns.

And I have come to one conclusion.

IT'S WORSE THAN I THOUGHT!

I knew the defense was bad against Dallas, but I didn't realize just how historically bad this team has become.

Let's take a look at the numbers. Fair warning: You might want to sit down for this.

The Defensive Hall of Shame

Against the Dallas Cowboys:

Statistic	Eagles Defense
Points allowed	38
Total yards allowed	416
Rushing yards allowed	204
Javonte Williams rushing yards	155
Sacks	0
Quarterback hits	0
Tackles for loss	0
QB pressures (Next Gen Stats)	6
Dallas scoring possessions	7 of 9

ZERO SACKS. ZERO HITS. ZERO TACKLES FOR LOSS.

How is that even possible?

We have invested an enormous amount of money and draft capital into this defensive line, and against Dallas, it looked like we might as well have put five traffic cones out there!

But wait. It gets worse.

Historically Bad — And I Mean Historically!

During the Eagles' current five-game losing streak, opponents have outgained Philadelphia by 822 yards.

According to Reuben Frank's statistical analysis, that's the worst five-game yardage differential for the Eagles in 54 years!

The last time it happened?

1972!

That's before I was even old enough to start getting my heart broken by Ron Jaworski and the Eagles!

Through seven games, Philadelphia has been outgained by 745 yards overall — its worst differential at that point in a season this century.

The defense has now surrendered at least 399 yards in four consecutive games, something the franchise has experienced only twice in its history.

And the Eagles currently rank at or near the bottom of the NFL in pass-rush production and takeaways.

This isn't just one bad game.

This is a team setting records nobody wants to own.

What Happened to Carter and Davis?

This is the part that really bothers me.

Watching the film, I saw something I honestly didn't expect.

There were plays where Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis appeared slow getting into their stances. There were others where they were moved around by the Dallas offensive line, leaving enormous rushing lanes.

Dallas repeatedly used double teams and extra offensive linemen to attack the middle of the Eagles defense.

And it worked.

At times, the holes were big enough to drive a bus through!

I'm not going to definitively accuse anyone of quitting. I don't know what's happening inside those players' heads. But the film doesn't lie about what happened on the field.

But I will say this:

There were snaps where the effort and execution simply did not look acceptable.

And it wasn't just Carter and Davis.

The edge rushers struggled, linebackers were slow to fill gaps or failed to shed blocks, defensive backs missed tackles, and coverage breakdowns were everywhere.

Vic Fangio didn't have many answers either.

This was a collective failure.

And that brings me to something else I've been wondering.

Is Vic Fangio Nearing the End?

This is purely my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if Fangio decides this is his final season in Philadelphia.

He's had a long, successful coaching career and helped bring another championship to this city.

Earlier this year, Fangio indicated that he expected to continue coaching for at least another couple of years. So there has been no announcement suggesting he's ready to leave.

But watching this season unfold, I wonder whether his outlook might change.

I also wonder whether the mounting injuries, ineffective pass rush, and repeated breakdowns have left him frustrated with what he has available.

I'm not saying Fangio has given up. I have no evidence of that.

But I do wonder whether he's beginning to see the writing on the wall.

If this season continues heading south, would anyone be shocked if he decided he'd had enough?

Again, just my opinion. But something about this defense feels very different from the one we watched win a championship.

Where Is the Accountability?

After the loss, Jalen Carter declined to answer reporters' questions. So did Riq Woolen.

Carter eventually spoke Wednesday, explaining that he doesn't consider himself a public spokesperson and questioning why reporters wanted to speak with him.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't sit particularly well with me.

When you're one of the highest-paid players on the team, expectations come with that paycheck.

Leadership isn't just about celebrating victories. Sometimes it means standing in front of reporters after an embarrassing defeat and acknowledging what happened.

Jordan Davis did speak about the defensive failures, and I respect that.

Which brings me to Jeffrey Lurie.

Our owner was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame during Monday night's game. Congratulations to him; his accomplishments with this franchise are undeniable.

But he wasn't made available for questions from reporters before the ceremony.

With the team collapsing and serious questions surrounding the organization's handling of Jalen Hurts' medical situation, I think the fans deserved an opportunity to hear from ownership.

Now, this is strictly my personal opinion, but I suspect Lurie didn't want to face questions about the Hurts situation.

I can't prove that, and I'm not pretending it's a fact.

But the timing certainly raises questions in my mind.

If you're willing to stand in front of the fans to accept an honor, I think you should also be willing to stand in front of reporters when things aren't going particularly well.

Lurie has done tremendous things for this franchise. Nobody should take that away from him.

But good leadership isn't only about being visible during the celebrations.

Accountability needs to start at the top.

Is Howie Getting Ready to Sell?

The November 10 trade deadline is approaching, and there's growing speculation that the Eagles could become sellers.

And honestly, at 2–5, I can understand the thinking.

If Howie Roseman receives genuinely good offers for players who might not be part of the long-term plan, he absolutely should consider them.

But here's one thing I appreciate about Howie.

Historically, he understands the value of draft capital, including future picks. A second-round pick two years from now doesn't magically become a third-round pick just because you have to wait for it.

He's already demonstrated that philosophy with the Cam Jurgens trade, which brought back a 2028 second-round selection among the compensation.

And there's another important consideration.

If the Eagles are likely to lose a player in free agency, Howie has to weigh the value of trading him now against the possibility of receiving a compensatory draft pick later.

Those compensatory picks aren't guaranteed, but they're certainly part of the calculation.

So who might be available?

Dallas Goedert — The End of an Era?

This one would hurt.

Goedert is playing on a one-year contract, and if a contender offered a third-round pick or better, I suspect Howie would have a very difficult time saying no.

Whether another team would actually offer that much is a different question.

But think about the history here.

Brent Celek. Zach Ertz. Dallas Goedert.

What an incredible run of tight ends we've enjoyed in Philadelphia!

Celek was one of those tough, dependable players you could count on. Ertz became one of the best receiving tight ends in football and made that unforgettable fourth-down touchdown catch in Super Bowl LII.

And then came Goedert.

A tremendous receiver, a willing blocker, and an important part of the Eagles' success for nearly a decade.

If he gets traded, it will truly feel like the end of an era.

And frankly, I don't have much confidence in Eli Stowers being ready to carry that tradition forward.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong. I certainly hope he does.

But those are some pretty big shoes to fill.

Riq Woolen — Could He Bring a Third?

Woolen is another interesting possibility.

He's on an expiring contract, and while he's had his share of struggles, he's still a talented cornerback with unusual size and athleticism.

I could see a contender being interested.

My guess would be somewhere in the third- or fourth-round range, depending on the market.

After his performance against Dallas, I'm not sure his value has gone up!

But there aren't many cornerbacks with his physical tools, and teams always need defensive backs.

Moro Ojomo — A Valuable Trade Chip

Ojomo might actually be one of the more attractive players Howie could move.

He's young, productive, and capable of contributing to a defensive line immediately.

The problem is that the Eagles have already invested heavily in Carter and Davis.

Can they realistically afford another substantial defensive tackle contract?

Perhaps not.

If Howie doesn't believe Ojomo will be here next season, a third-round pick could be very tempting.

And if Ojomo might otherwise bring a compensatory pick in 2028, getting a regular third-round selection now could make considerable sense.

Personally, I would hate to lose him.

But that's the difficult part of managing an NFL roster.

You can't keep everybody.

Nolan Smith — Another Name to Watch

Smith is an especially interesting case.

Unlike Goedert, Woolen, and Ojomo, he's under contract through 2027.

That gives a potential buyer more than a half-season rental and might increase his trade value.

Some analysts believe he could bring a second-round selection.

If that kind of offer arrives, I suspect Howie will listen very carefully.

The Eagles have invested heavily in their edge-rusher group, and decisions about future contracts are approaching.

I wouldn't give Smith away, particularly at a premium position.

But a second-round draft pick?

That's an entirely different conversation.

No Fire Sale, Please!

I don't want to watch the Eagles give away talented young players just because this season has gone sideways.

But I also don't want Howie pretending this roster is one minor adjustment away from another Super Bowl.

If the offers are good enough, make the deals.

If they aren't, keep the players.

And remember, a future compensatory pick is only a possibility, not something already sitting in the bank.

The objective shouldn't be to dump players. It should be to make the 2027 Eagles a better football team.

Where Do We Go From Here?

I honestly don't know.

What I do know is that the problems are no longer confined to Sean Mannion's offense.

The defense has collapsed. The team struggles after halftime. The injuries keep piling up. And the coaching staff hasn't demonstrated that it can consistently correct the problems.

Nick Sirianni is ultimately responsible for the entire operation.

The Eagles have lost five consecutive games, and the numbers suggest this is much more than a temporary slump.

For the first time in a long while, I'm seriously questioning whether this coaching staff can turn things around.

And here's perhaps the saddest part of this whole discussion.

It's October, and we're already talking about next season!

The NFL offseason is long enough under normal circumstances. Now it feels like ours has started more than two months early.

We've gone from discussing playoff seeding and Super Bowl aspirations to debating which players might bring a third-round draft pick.

Ugh.

That's a pretty depressing place to be in October.

But you know what?

I'll be watching Sunday night against Washington.

I'll probably be yelling at the television, questioning the play-calling, and wondering why I keep doing this to myself.

Because that's what Eagles fans do.

I've been watching this team since the Ron Jaworski days. I've seen plenty of terrible football, heartbreaking losses, and seasons that seemed to be going nowhere.

And I've also seen two Super Bowl championships.

We've survived worse.

Maybe, just maybe, they'll give us something worth cheering about.

And if not?

Well, there's always next week.

FLY EAGLES FLY! 🦅

Let's Talk Football!

Do you think the defense has simply lost its confidence, or are we seeing bigger problems with effort and leadership?

Do you think Fangio will return next season?

Should Howie Roseman become a seller at the trade deadline? And which player would you be most disappointed to lose?

And has Nick Sirianni run out of answers?

Let's hear it!

Eagles Talk #1b closes out our Dallas aftermath. Next up: Eagles Talk #2, and hopefully a little less misery!
