So what’s next?
Man United has been in a pretty tough spot for several years now—they just haven’t been able to find the right coach to bring them back to the top of English soccer since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down. There’s been a revolving door of coaches at the club, and none has been able to build a solid team that can compete over multiple seasons; there was one who managed to put together a good team, but he didn’t last long in the job.
But keep in mind that United’s problem isn’t just about the manager—it runs much deeper. Carrick could step down at any moment, but whoever replaces him will inherit the same problems this team has been carrying for years.
Today I saw a group of players who—I’m not sure if they realize it—are privileged to wear the Manchester United jersey, a team where being part of the roster should be a mark of prestige. But we’ve seen players speak out against their manager in the press—or perhaps they think they’re bigger or more important than him—and we see on the roster that there are several players who, with all due respect, aren’t good enough to wear that jersey. If they were on mid-table or lower-table teams—which is where I think they belong—they’d be right where they should be, not at United.
But what’s next for United? Because, in my view, it was the right call to keep Carrick in his position after the comments from several players; I believe clubs must ensure their head coaches are respected and given the necessary support so they can succeed—in that sense, United showed itself to be a great team. The problem might not be Carrick; perhaps these players simply aren’t up to the required standard. Firing Carrick at this point wouldn’t change anything, especially with a string of crucial matches coming up for the club—in my opinion, it would do the team far more harm than good.
So United’s management must carefully assess the situation and make decisions that will either be vital to the team’s recovery or cause it to fall apart even further. It’s up to them to get this train back on track—a train that seems to be heading nowhere, or perhaps it does have a destination, but it’s not the one the fans want.
Today I was listening to the fans’ reactions, and some of them were saying they hoped the team would be relegated to the second division so that drastic decisions would finally be made. The truth is, I don’t think it has to come to that, but something must be done. Getting this team back on track won’t be easy and will take longer than some people think. They need to let go of the players who’ve had their time at the club and bring in players who know what it means to wear that jersey and who are committed to the club and to themselves—the fans deserve much more than this.
