FROM YEARS OF WAITING TO FOOTBALL'S BIGGEST CROWN! HARRY KANE FINALLY WINS THE BALLON D’OR!
4 min readFootball
Imagine spending years being known as one of the best strikers in the world, scoring goals season after season, yet still hearing people question whether you can win the biggest trophies.
Then one night, everything changes.
Harry Kane is officially the 2026 Men's Ballon d’Or winner! 👏
The England captain and Bayern Munich striker has finally claimed the individual honour that has eluded him throughout his career. And for me, this story is bigger than just another player lifting a trophy. It is about persistence, consistency and what happens when individual brilliance finally meets a season of major achievements.
But let's not pretend the debate is over. Because this year's race had some serious names in it!
KANE, MBAPPÉ AND YAMAL: THREE DIFFERENT STORIES
Harry Kane finished first, Kylian Mbappé came second, and Lamine Yamal finished third.
Kane's case was built on extraordinary numbers. He scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025–26 season, helped Bayern win major domestic honours and continued to lead the line for England.
That is not a small achievement. Goals matter, consistency matters, and delivering across an entire season matters.
But what made this race interesting was the competition.
Mbappé continued to produce at the highest level, while Yamal's performances reminded everyone that football's next generation is already challenging the established superstars.
Yamal finishing third at his age is remarkable. But should potential and influence carry the same weight as a season of goals and trophies? That is a debate worth having.
For me, Kane's victory makes sense because his season combined extraordinary scoring numbers with team success. But I also understand why supporters of Mbappé and Yamal might have made a different choice.
Football awards are rarely free from disagreement. Perhaps that is part of what makes them so interesting.
THE OTHER WINNERS DESERVE THEIR MOMENT TOO
The ceremony was not only about the men's award.
🔵🔴 Alexia Putellas won the Women's Ballon d’Or for the third time, adding another major individual honour to her remarkable career.
🌟 Lamine Yamal won Men's Young Talent of the Year, while Vicky López took the women's award.
🧤 Unai Simón won Men's Goalkeeper of the Year, and Cata Coll won the women's award.
🧠 Luis de la Fuente and Pere Romeu were recognised as the men's and women's coaches of the year.
🏟️ Paris Saint-Germain won Men's Club of the Year, while Barcelona won the women's club award.
❤️ Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award, which recognises humanitarian work and social initiatives.
There were plenty of stories beyond the main trophy, and that is worth remembering when we discuss awards nights.
WHAT KANE'S WIN REALLY MEANS
One thing I find interesting about Kane's victory is the journey behind it.
For years, people discussed his individual quality alongside the trophies he had not won. His move to Bayern Munich gave him a new environment, and his continued goalscoring has helped him build a remarkable record.
Now he has the Ballon d’Or.
It doesn't mean every criticism of his career was wrong, nor does one award settle every historical debate. But it does show how quickly the conversation can change when a player keeps producing at the highest level.
Sometimes the player people question becomes the player everyone has to acknowledge.
Harry Kane has his Ballon d’Or. The debate now belongs to the fans.
HIVE FAMILY, LET'S SETTLE THIS!
I want honest opinions, not just congratulations for the winner.
1\. Did Harry Kane deserve the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal?
2\. Should goals and trophies carry more weight than overall influence and creativity?
3\. Is Lamine Yamal already on course to win the main award in the coming years, or is that expectation being placed on him too early?
4\. Which winner or result from last night's ceremony surprised you most?
And congratulations to Harry Kane. Whatever side of the debate you are on, winning the Ballon d’Or is a remarkable achievement.
