Germany needed another step forward under Jürgen Klopp. Instead, Greece reminded them that this rebuild is nowhere near finished.

There is something interesting happening with Germany under Jürgen Klopp.

They finally got their first win under him on Thursday, beating Serbia 2–0 and looking much more convincing in the process. Florian Wirtz scored and assisted, Tom Bischof got his first senior international goal, and Klopp spoke about setting a new standard for the team.

Then came Greece.

And suddenly, the questions returned.

Germany were held to a 0–0 draw in Thessaloniki, meaning Greece remain unbeaten in Group A2 and continue to sit at the top of the group. Germany, meanwhile, are still trying to find consistency under their new manager.

But I don't think this result should be viewed as a disaster for Klopp.

I think it tells us something much more useful.

Germany still haven't figured out how to break down a team that refuses to give them space.

That was the real battle in Greece.

Greece already knew the problem

This wasn't Germany's first meeting with Greece in this Nations League campaign.

Greece had already beaten them 1–0 in Augsburg.

That result was not some lucky accident either. Klopp himself admitted before the return match that Greece's victory had not been undeserved.

So Greece knew exactly what they were facing.

They knew Germany would want the ball.

They knew Germany would try to push the defensive line backwards.

And they knew that if they remained disciplined, the pressure would eventually move back onto Klopp's players.

That's exactly what happened.

Germany had to find a way through a Greek side that was comfortable defending without constantly chasing the ball.

And this time, they couldn't find the breakthrough.

This is where Klopp's real work begins

It would have been easy to get excited after the Serbia victory.

Germany looked energetic.

The young players looked fearless.

Wirtz looked influential.

Bischof announced himself.

Klopp finally had something positive to point towards.

But rebuilding an international team isn't about producing one excellent performance.

It's about finding solutions against different types of opponents.

Serbia gave Germany opportunities.

Greece didn't give them nearly as many.

That's the next level Klopp has to reach.

Can Germany control a match when the opponent sits deeper?

Can they create chances when the spaces between the lines disappear?

Can they remain patient without becoming predictable?

Those questions are more important than the 0–0 itself.

And Greece deserve credit

We shouldn't make this entire story about Germany.

Greece have now beaten Germany once and drawn with the Netherlands during this Nations League campaign. They currently lead Group A2, and that is no accident.

They are becoming difficult to play against.

And there is something refreshing about seeing a team that isn't intimidated by the bigger name on the other side.

Greece didn't need to pretend they were Germany.

They played their own game.

They defended.

They stayed organised.

And they made Germany work for every opening.

That's why the 0–0 feels more significant than an ordinary goalless draw.

Klopp has something to build on but not something to celebrate yet

This is probably where I'd be careful with the reaction.

Germany aren't suddenly a bad team because they couldn't beat Greece.

And Klopp isn't suddenly failing because his team drew 0–0.

He has inherited a team that is still finding its identity, and the Nations League is giving him exactly what a new international manager needs: different opponents presenting different problems.

Germany have already shown they can respond after a poor result.

They lost to Greece, then beat Serbia 2–0.

Now they have drawn with Greece.

The next step is obvious.

They need to start turning these performances into consistency.

The bigger picture

Germany are not short of talent.

That's not the problem.

The interesting question is whether Klopp can turn that talent into a team that knows exactly what it wants to do regardless of the opponent.

Against Serbia, the attacking football worked.

Against Greece, the game became much harder to unlock.

That contrast is valuable.

Because international tournaments aren't won by beating only the teams that allow you to play your favourite football.

Eventually, you meet the opponent who refuses to cooperate.

That's where Germany need to become better.

I'm not going to call the 0–0 a failure.

I'd actually call it useful information for Klopp.

Germany have shown improvement.

They have also shown a weakness.

They can look dangerous when the game opens up, but Greece have now demonstrated twice that they can make Germany uncomfortable by controlling the spaces and refusing to give them an easy route through.

And that's exactly the kind of problem Klopp needs to solve.

Because the goal isn't simply to make Germany entertaining again.

It's to make them difficult to beat.

Greece have now made that challenge very clear.

Germany's rebuild isn't broken.

But it isn't finished either.

And perhaps that's the real story from Thessaloniki.

Klopp got his first win.

Then Greece reminded him how much work is still ahead.
