If you love football, the Carabao Cup gave us a reminder of why knockout competitions are so dangerous. One bad decision, one missed chance or one penalty can turn a promising night into a nightmare.
Manchester City needed penalties to escape Brighton. Liverpool needed a shootout to eliminate Chelsea. Bournemouth didn't need any of that drama, smashing Aston Villa 3–0. And Sunderland? They put Brentford away in a thrilling 3–2 contest.
But the biggest lesson from these matches is simple: having the bigger name doesn't guarantee you the result.
Let's get into it!
MANCHESTER CITY: SURVIVAL, NOT DOMINANCE
Manchester City 2–2 Brighton. City won 4–3 on penalties.
City's evening at the Etihad was far from comfortable. Brighton took the lead through Malick Yalcouyé in the 30th minute, before Mateo Kovačić equalised ten minutes later.
Brighton struck again shortly after half-time, with Georginio Rutter making it 2–1. City were suddenly staring at elimination, and Brighton had opportunities to make the situation even worse.
Then came the equaliser. Rayan Cherki's free-kick was diverted into the net by Vitor Reis in the 72nd minute, forcing the tie into a penalty shootout.
This is where Gerónimo Rulli became the hero. The City goalkeeper saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, helping the holders win the shootout 4–3.
Let's be honest: City survived a serious test. Brighton had enough opportunities to win this game, and the result will feel frustrating for them.
But cup football doesn't reward the team that looks better on paper. It rewards the team that gets through.
City are still alive. Brighton are out. That's the brutal beauty of knockout football.
LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA: ONE SHOOTOUT, ONE HEARTBREAK
Liverpool 1–1 Chelsea. Liverpool won 6–5 on penalties.
Anfield witnessed another tense night between two clubs who rarely need an extra reason to compete fiercely.
Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers from the penalty spot after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo. Liverpool responded when Cody Gakpo converted a penalty of their own after Wesley Fofana handled the ball.
Neither side could find a winner in normal time, so everything came down to the shootout.
There were missed opportunities on both sides, but Fofana's penalty sailed over the crossbar, handing Liverpool the decisive advantage. Joe Gomez converted the winning kick for the Reds.
For Liverpool, it was a night of relief and progress. For Chelsea, it was another painful exit from a competition they would have wanted to remain in.
And here's the question: when a match is decided by penalties, how much should we blame the players who miss?
Penalties require technique, but they also demand composure under enormous pressure. Sometimes the difference between hero and villain is a matter of inches.
BOURNEMOUTH DIDN'T NEED PENALTIES!
While City and Liverpool were sweating through shootouts, Bournemouth delivered one of the night's most convincing performances.
Bournemouth 3–0 Aston Villa.
Amine Adli opened the scoring in the seventh minute, Lewis Cook added a second early in the second half, and Álvaro Rodríguez completed the victory.
Villa had enjoyed a strong run before this match, but Bournemouth were sharper and more clinical. They took control of the contest and gave Villa very little room to recover.
This result deserves attention because Bournemouth didn't merely scrape through. They delivered a convincing win against a side that arrived with confidence.
Sometimes the most impressive cup performance isn't the one with the most drama. It's the one where a team makes the difficult look straightforward.
SUNDERLAND FIGHT BACK INTO THE SPOTLIGHT
Sunderland 3–2 Brentford.
Sunderland scored three first-half goals through Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana, putting themselves in a commanding position.
Brentford refused to disappear quietly. Callum Wilson pulled one back, and Igor Thiago scored late to make the closing moments uncomfortable for the home side.
Sunderland held on.
That victory showed the importance of starting strongly, but it also exposed the danger of allowing an opponent back into a match that should already be under control.
For Sunderland, reaching the quarter-finals is a significant achievement. For Brentford, the late fightback will offer some encouragement, but it cannot erase the damage done earlier.
AND DON'T FORGET FLEETWOOD TOWN!
Before Wednesday's drama, Fleetwood Town had already produced one of the competition's biggest shocks by eliminating Arsenal.
That result is a reminder of why cup football remains special. The financial power, squad depth and reputation of a club can matter, but they don't guarantee victory over 90 minutes.
For smaller clubs, these matches are an opportunity to create memories that supporters will talk about for years.
And for the giants? They're a warning that no opponent should be underestimated.
WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM THESE RESULTS?
First, squad depth matters, but it isn't everything. Big clubs can rotate players and still struggle against organised, motivated opponents.
Second, goalkeepers can decide cup ties. Rulli's saves gave City another chance when Brighton were threatening to knock them out.
Third, the ability to manage difficult moments matters just as much as attacking quality. Liverpool and City both had to survive pressure before progressing.
And finally, we should give credit to the teams that actually perform. Bournemouth and Sunderland earned their places in the next round with victories that deserve recognition.
The Carabao Cup is not always about beautiful football. Sometimes it's about surviving, adapting and finding a way through.
And sometimes, one missed penalty changes everything.
