Real Madrid Are the Kings of the Comeback And Roma Just Learned Why.
7 min readFootball
There are football matches you watch, matches you enjoy, and matches that remind you why you should never switch off when Real Madrid are playing.
Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Roma belonged to the third category.
For 83 minutes, it looked as though Real Madrid were heading towards a painful defeat in Rome. Roma had a 3–1 advantage, their supporters had every reason to believe, and the famous European comeback machine appeared to have run out of time.
Then Real Madrid did what Real Madrid have done so many times before.
They refused to accept the ending everyone else could already see.
From 3–1 down to 4–3 winners. In seven minutes. That is ridiculous football.
And yet, somehow, it felt familiar.
This was not a match in which Real Madrid dominated from the opening whistle and simply waited for their goals to arrive. Roma competed, created problems and looked capable of delivering a memorable victory.
Marten de Roon put the hosts ahead in the first half, but Kylian Mbappé responded to make it 1–1. After the break, Donyell Malen struck twice, putting Roma 3–1 ahead and leaving Madrid staring at the possibility of defeat.
At that point, the pressure was firmly on the visitors.
Madrid had to find three goals just to win the game. The clock was running down, Roma had the advantage, and there was very little room for another mistake.
Most teams would have started thinking about damage limitation.
Real Madrid started thinking about the next attack.
That difference matters.
Then came Endrick.
The young Brazilian scored the equaliser, giving Madrid belief and turning the pressure back onto Roma. The home side had spent most of the second half protecting an advantage. Now they had to survive a finish that was becoming increasingly uncomfortable.
And Madrid were not finished.
Antonio Rüdiger completed the turnaround with a spectacular late finish, sending the travelling supporters into celebration and leaving Roma wondering how a match they had controlled for so long had disappeared from their hands.
Three goals. Seven minutes. One extraordinary turnaround.
There was another detail worth noticing: all three goals came from corners delivered by Arda Güler.
That is not just a story about fighting spirit. It is also a reminder that set pieces can decide the biggest matches, particularly when a team is running out of time and needs a reliable route back into the game.
Madrid found one. Roma could not stop it.
People often describe Real Madrid's European history using words like mentality, belief and experience. Sometimes those words are repeated so frequently that they lose their meaning.
But performances like this give them meaning again.
When Madrid were 3–1 down in the 83rd minute, they had every reason to feel the game was slipping away. Instead, they kept pushing, kept delivering the ball into dangerous areas and kept believing that another opportunity would come.
Of course, belief alone does not score goals. The quality of Güler's deliveries, the reactions in the penalty area and the finishing from Espí, Endrick and Rüdiger all mattered.
But belief can influence what happens before the decisive moment. It can determine whether players keep attacking with conviction or begin to accept defeat.
Real Madrid did not accept it.
Their greatest weapon was not simply the ability to score late. It was the refusal to behave like a beaten team.
That is what makes this result so fascinating. Madrid did not need 90 minutes of perfection. They needed a few decisive moments, and when those moments arrived, they took them.
A 4–3 victory is wonderful, and a comeback of this magnitude deserves to be celebrated. But Madrid were also two goals behind with only minutes remaining.
They had struggled to contain Roma, conceded three goals and found themselves in a position where one more mistake could have ended the contest.
If the late corners had not produced those goals, we might be discussing a disappointing Madrid performance rather than a legendary comeback.
That does not diminish the achievement. It simply gives us a more balanced picture.
Champions need resilience, but they also need control. They need the ability to rescue games, but they should not have to rescue every difficult game from the edge of defeat.
Madrid have shown that they can turn chaos into opportunity. The next question is whether they can avoid putting themselves in such difficult situations in the first place.
Because there is a difference between being capable of a comeback and depending on one.
They had done enough to put themselves in a winning position. Malen's two goals had given them a commanding advantage, and a home victory over Real Madrid would have been a major European statement.
Instead, three late goals turned celebration into disbelief.
That is the cruel side of football. You can play well for long stretches and still lose because you fail to manage the moments that matter most.
Roma will have to examine how they defended those corners and why Madrid were allowed to keep creating dangerous situations so late in the match.
But they should also take some encouragement from the performance before the collapse. They made Madrid uncomfortable and exposed weaknesses that other opponents may look to exploit.
The problem is that, against Real Madrid, a good performance is not always enough.
You must finish the job.
Real Madrid were trailing 3–1 in the 83rd minute. They scored three times in seven minutes, defeated Roma 4–3 and produced the kind of European drama that supporters will remember long after the final whistle.
The victory does not mean Madrid are invincible. It does not erase the problems they showed during the match, and it certainly does not guarantee that every future comeback will end in their favour.
But it reinforces something about this club: when Real Madrid are still within reach of a result, you cannot assume the story is over.
That is the difference between having a famous history and continuing to add to it.
For Roma, seven minutes were enough to lose a match they looked certain to win. For Madrid, seven minutes were enough to turn a potential defeat into another chapter in their European story.
And that leaves me with one question for the Hive football family:
Are Real Madrid genuinely the kings of the comeback, or do we sometimes give them too much credit for rescuing games they should have controlled in the first place?
I want to hear your honest take.

Roma Had Them Exactly Where They Wanted Them
Let's give Roma some credit before celebrating Madrid's comeback. This was not a match in which Real Madrid dominated from the opening whistle and simply waited for their goals to arrive. Roma competed, created problems and looked capable of delivering a memorable victory.

Seven Minutes That Changed Everything
The comeback began with Carlos Espí, whose late goal brought Madrid back into the contest. Suddenly, a match that seemed to be slipping away had a completely different atmosphere. Then came Endrick.
The young Brazilian scored the equaliser, giving Madrid belief and turning the pressure back onto Roma. The home side had spent most of the second half protecting an advantage. Now they had to survive a finish that was becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

Is This What Makes Real Madrid Different?
This is where the conversation gets interesting.People often describe Real Madrid's European history using words like mentality, belief and experience. Sometimes those words are repeated so frequently that they lose their meaning.

Roma Will Remember Those Final Minutes
For Roma, this defeat will hurt. They had done enough to put themselves in a winning position. Malen's two goals had given them a commanding advantage, and a home victory over Real Madrid would have been a major European statement.

So, Are Real Madrid the Kings of the Comeback?
I think Wednesday night's result gives us another reason to make that argument.Real Madrid were trailing 3–1 in the 83rd minute. They scored three times in seven minutes, defeated Roma 4–3 and produced the kind of European drama that supporters will remember long after the final whistle.
