Manchester United’s Problems Go Beyond the Manager

Watching Manchester United lose 2-0 to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League was another reminder that something is still not right at Old Trafford. As a football lover, I look at this result and see more than just a team losing a football match. I see a club struggling to find consistency, direction, and the right balance in its squad even despite the manager using different tactics and rotating players in the midfield.

The game started badly for United. Conceding after just 47 seconds was far from ideal, especially against a team like Atlético Madrid, who know how to punish defensive mistakes. United had opportunities to get back into the game, but creating chances means very little when you cannot convert them into goals. Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo had moments that could have changed the story, but those opportunities went begging.
Leny Yoro's red card made things more worse, although I understand why some people considered the decision harsh. Still, United cannot blame the entire defeat on that incident. Their problems started long before the sending-off, and Atlético eventually took advantage of the situation to secure the win.
What caught my attention even more was Lisandro Martínez speaking publicly about the club's leadership after the match. He questioned the level of investment in the squad and suggested that the problems at United go beyond just the manager only.
Honestly, I think there is something worth discussing in what he said. It is easy for supporters to demand a manager's dismissal whenever results become disappointing, but how much responsibility should the people above the manager take? A coach needs the right players, sufficient squad depth, and proper support to compete at the highest level.
However, that does not mean the players should escape criticism. United had chances to score, and their defensive organisation was questionable from the opening minute. Investment alone will not solve everything if the team continues making basic mistakes and failing to take its opportunities.
For me, the biggest concern is the club's direction. Constant changes in management can make it difficult to establish a clear identity, especially when each new coach has different ideas about how the team should play. United need more than another reaction to a disappointing result. They need a plan that everyone at the club is willing to follow.
Looking ahead, I am not particularly confident about United's Champions League campaign. Their current performances raise serious questions about how far they can progress, while their Premier League struggles could continue if these problems remain unresolved.
Still, football can change quickly. United have talented players, but talent must be supported by discipline, consistency, and effective leadership.
